Whether you’re planning a personal visit, a family reunion, or an organized group program, we can help ensure your trip to Yellowstone is a success. We can arrange a one-day tour or a multi-day program with lodging.
Our Small Group Programs are multiday packages that include instruction, in-park transportation, use of professional spotting scopes and binoculars, and lodging at our Yellowstone Overlook Field Campus located just minutes from the park’s North Entrance in Gardiner, Montana. We’ll have snacks, but you’ll need to provide your own meals and ski or snowshoe rental.
Our Private Tours are one day tours with your own private naturalist guide. They will introduce you to Yellowstone, provide advice to make the most of your visit, and lead you into the wonders of the park. Private Tours include instruction, in-park transportation, and use of professional spotting scopes. We provide drinks and snacks, You provide your own meals and snowshoes or skis.
Small Group Programs With Lodging
Summer Yellowstone Sampler
Spend four days seeing the best of Yellowstone. Your first day will be spent in the Mammoth Hot Springs area, where we will provide an introduction to the park and its colorful history. On the second day, we’ll head out to look for wolves and other wildlife. You’ll have the next day to explore the area on your own; we’ll be happy to suggest some of our favorite park destinations and activities. On your last day, we’ll head down to Old Faithful to see the world’s largest collection of thermal features and also visit the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Days include hikes up to 3 miles per day with elevation gains of up to 250 feet (some off-trail hiking possible). (April-October)

Happy Trails
Geared toward the more active group, this package takes you off the beaten path. Our first day will include an interpretive hike on the northern range in the wildlife heart of Yellowstone. Along the trail, we’ll learn about wolves, bears, elk, and more. The second day’s excursion will be a hike through time as we look at the park’s geology in the Old Faithful area. We’ll explore geysers and mudpots and learn about the park’s supervolcano. The last day, we’ll talk about the national park idea and Yellowstone’s colorful history as we hike around the Mammoth Hot Springs area. Days include brisk aerobic, destination-oriented hiking of up to 12 miles a day. Elevation changes of up to 2,000 feet on dirt trails or off-trail; loose rock, uneven footing, steep hillside traverses, and stream crossings are possible. Good coordination is required. (April-October)

Wildlife Adventure
Learn about Yellowstone’s bears, wolves, and other animals during driving tours and short hikes in various wildlife hotspots. We’ll locate animals using high-power scopes, and then interpret their behavior while watching from a safe and respectful distance. Along the way, we’ll talk about their environment, ecology, and management. The itinerary for this program will vary to take advantage of seasonal wildlife watching opportunities, from baby bison taking their first steps in spring to bull elk battling for dominance in fall. As we travel around Yellowstone in search of wildlife, we’ll also talk about the geology, history, and importance of the world’s first national park. Days include hikes up to 3 miles per day with elevation gains of up to 250 feet (some off-trail hiking possible). (April-October)

Explore the natural and geologic history of the Yellowstone Lake Area, and the spectacular Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River. Search for wildlife in the bison-rich Hayden Valley, and learn about the Yellowstone volcano on easy geology strolls. (April-October)
Geysers, Mudpots, and Hot Springs: Old Faithful Area
Start: 8 a.m. at Gardiner, Mammoth, or Norris; 9:30 a.m. at Madison or Old Faithful
From the center of the world’s greatest concentration of hydrothermal features, take an in-depth look at how they form and why they do the things they do. You’ll travel on boardwalks and easy trails, observing geologic features that reveal the wonders of Yellowstone’s volcano. (April-October)
Day Hiking in Yellowstone
Start: 8 a.m. at Gardiner, Mammoth, Canyon, Lake, or Roosevelt; 9:30 a.m. at Madison or Old Faithful
Carefully chosen hikes explore Yellowstone’s diverse landscape. Learn the basics of safe, low-impact backcountry travel in grizzly country with an Institute naturalist guide skilled in backcountry travel. Hikes are selected to match your group’s ability level and interests. (April-October)
Wolves in Winter
Start: 7 or 8 a.m. at Gardiner, Mammoth, or Lamar
Immerse yourself in the world of wolves. Learn about their historic reintroduction, their affect on park ecology, and challenges with their management. With any luck, you’ll even see them! Includes a short field excursion if you choose. (November-March)
Wildlife Watching on the Northern Range
Start: 7 or 8 a.m. at Gardiner, Mammoth, or Lamar
Discover the diverse and abundant wildlife of Yellowstone’s Northern Range. Learn how to search for wildlife and interpret their behavior. You’ll also explore the vital role each species plays in the Yellowstone ecosystem. Includes a short field excursion if you choose. (November-March)
Yellowstone by Ski or Snowshoe
Start: 8 a.m. at Gardiner, Mammoth, or Lamar
All-day cross-country skiing or snowshoeing in Yellowstone’s winter wilderness. We will be both active participants and quiet observers while learning about wildlife, history, ecology, and geology on carefully chosen trails. (November-March)
