Join the Yellowstone Association Institute for a week learning about wolves in the Lamar Valley–where wolf researchers and enthusiasts gather in the best place in the world to observe wild wolves. Immerse yourself in the wolf world through this all-inclusive education package at the Lamar Valley Buffalo Ranch. From our comfortable base in a pristine wilderness setting you’ll search for and observe wolves in the wild and gain insights from an experienced local naturalist guide intimately familiar with wolf movements, habitat, and behavior. In addition to unparalleled wolf-watching opportunities, you’ll also learn about their history, conservation, and management from guests like Rick McIntyre, who has been studying Yellowstone’s wolves since their re-introduction. Anyone who dreams of watching wolves in the wild, meeting the men and women who are studying them today, or going beyond sightseeing to learn more in depth will appreciate this experience in the world’s most accessible wolf-watching habitat. This is your chance to unplug, relax, and get in sync with Yellowstone’s winter rhythms. Children 12 and older are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult family member at all times.

Each day begins with an early morning bus ride through the valley in search of wolves. Once they are spotted, you’ll set up scopes to watch and learn about what happens. You’ll travel with a picnic lunch to allow maximum opportunities for wolf observation. After the morning activity is winding down, stretch your legs on snowshoe excursions into wolf habitat with your instructor. The afternoon is yours to relax, nap, or peruse the Buffalo Ranch library collection. Dinner each evening is followed by a presentation or the opportunity to head out into the night with the group to listen for wolf howls under the stars.

This program includes instruction, snowshoes, and three hearty, catered meals a day. Meals begin with dinner on Monday and end with breakfast on Friday.

Lodging at the Lamar Valley Buffalo Ranch is recommended for this course. You can book your cabin when you register.

Activity Level:  Hikes on snow-packed trails, or snowshoe or ski trips, up to 3 miles per day with climbs up to 250 feet.

Start: December 13 at 7 p.m.
End: December 17 at 9 a.m.
